Happy Cats Behaviour (Dr Annette Lockley) is providing home visits for behavioural issues of cats, on the NSW Central Coast. (Remote consultations are possible, in collaboration with your regular local vet). Common problems include urinating outside the litter box, conflict between household cats, and excessive vocalisation (meowing) especially in senior cats. Quite often, behavioural problems in cats have underlying medical causes, so these generally need to be assessed for first, either by your regular vet, or with Dr Annette’s help. Some medical conditions may also be triggered or worsened by stress and anxiety, and addressing these issues is an important part of management of such conditions.
(Please note, as Dr Annette is not a veterinary behaviour specialist, there might be situations where referral to a behaviour specialist is recommended, if feasible for the owner.)

Setting your new cat up for success by providing the ideal environment, and ensuring feline emotional needs are met, can help to prevent future behaviour issues and ensure your cat is happy! These consultations, which can be done remotely or via home visit, are designed to assist new cat owners (whether kitten or adult cat) in creating a cat-friendly home. This includes advice on understanding your cat’s behaviour and communication, feeding, play and training sessions, introducing a new cat to a household with existing cats (and/or dogs), and how to appropriately provide for an ‘indoor’ cat (ie, one that is restricted to the owner’s property). These visits can be tailored to your specific needs.

Behavioural issues in senior cats (11 years plus) may be associated with medical conditions, declining senses (hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch) and cognitive decline. These all need to be considered in senior cats, along with other behavioural causes. Making simple adjustments to the home environment, combined with a number of other provisions and sometimes medications and supplements, can help ensure senior cats with particular needs live happily and comfortably, and without performing some of the behaviours that can be unpleasant for their care-givers.
